Turn-of-the-century estate/historic garden on the shores of Lake Sunapee invites students to apply for summer internships. The estate is adjacent to the John Hay National Wildlife Refuge. A privately funded, locally based non-profit group manages the site's four buildings and landscaped gardens and grounds. The site is open to the public for interpretive tours of the Main House, art gallery, and gardens as well as for hiking and the private contemplation of the natural world. Education classes are offered year-round in history, horticulture, ecology and the arts.


2008 Internship Opportunity in Historic Public Garden
Summer 2008 (3 positions)

Sample Responsibilities: The Historic Public Garden Intern would work directly with the Landscape Manager in rehabilitating and maintaining the grounds and gardens of The Fells. Duties may include:
- Maintain existing historic gardens (weeding, planting, watering, mowing, and other garden maintenance tasks).
- Plan and carry out a specific historic landscape research project.
- Participate in the historical renovation of our 1909 Old Garden.
- Offer garden tours to general public or private groups.
- Assist in site management, educational programs and fundraising events.

Qualifications: Horticultural Interns have the unique opportunity to work with a talented professional staff in a well-established and historically rich horticultural site. The individual who fills this role must have some knowledge of public horticulture and estate management, and be articulate, high energy, trustworthy, and hard working. The individual must be able to work with a dynamic and varied staff and volunteers, speak to groups, and work independently.

Hours, Stipend, Housing: The internship season at The Fells runs between April and September. Interns work full-time for a period of 12-24 weeks, depending on their school schedule and staffing needs of The Fells. Stipend is $250 per week if funds are not available from the student's college/university. Some weekend and evening hours are required. Onsite housing is available in the historic house.
