Saturdays: January 26, February 2 and February 9, 10am-4pm
Residential Landscape Design
Co-sponsored with the New England Wild Flower Society and may be applied towards the NEWFS Certificate in Native Plant Studies.

This multi-session course introduces participants to the landscape design process with special emphasis placed on native plants in the residential landscape. Workshop sessions focus on design methods using site analysis techniques and schematic design tools. Students complete a design plan of their choice with assistance from instructor, Liz Krieg. Liz, a gardening professional and owner of Rising Sun Greenhouses and Landscape Company in Bethel, Vermont, is a degreed horticulturist, a Vermont Certified Horticulturist and a Vermont Master Gardener. She is an enthusiastic educator and dynamic lecturer and offers landscape consultation and design services throughout New Hampshire and Vermont. Included in the workshop is material on plants and habitats and information on plant choice and placement in the landscape. Required materials: 11" x 17" quadrille graph paper; 12" x 18" tracing paper; and a ruler and pencil. Appropriate for beginners. Meet at The Fells Gatehouse. Tolles, Jr., Director of Museum Studies and celebrated author and professor in this slide-illustrated lecture which treats the architecture and related history of the grand resort hotels of the White Mountains of New Hampshire, focusing primarily on the period l850 to 1950. Winter Mammal Tracking: Stories in the Snow
Co-sponsored by the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests

Join naturalist Dave Anderson for a hike in the Forest Society's Hay Forest Reservation. Late winter is a perfect time to observe an entire winter's worth of well-worn wildlife trails. Find evidence of late emerging mammals including skunks, raccoons and chipmunks; learn the names of five weasel species in local forests; how gray squirrels tap maple tree buds; and how mice use a network of tunnels to find food and hide from hungry predators. Exploring Vernal Pools: A Walk for Families
Co-sponsored by the Lake Sunapee Protective Association

Vernal pools, unique and vulnerable pools of water created in depressions by snow melt and run off, are devoid of fish and thus allow the safe development of natal amphibian and insect species, such as spotted salamanders, fairy shrimp and wood frogs. Bring the family and visit a vernal pool in The Fells woods with Lake Sunapee Protective Association Education Director Kathleen Stowell. Learn how to identify these pools, their vegetation and animal life. Dress appropriately for the weather, waterproof footwear recommended. Meet at The Fells Welcome Kiosk. Vernal Pools and Breeding Amphibians Workshop

As winter snow melts, new life returns to the forest when temporary vernal pools host a chorus of breeding wood frogs and silent spotted salamanders. Learn about the ecology, life cycle and natural history of woodland vernal pools and how to identify the various amphibian inhabitants. Class includes an introduction to N.H. frogs and salamanders, field guides and habitat conservation issues. Dress appropriately for the weather, waterproof footwear recommended. Entertaining Visitors: Boarding Houses, Hotels, Cottages, and Fishing Camps on Lake Sunapee
Part of the 2008 History Series, "Hosting Our Summer Guests: The 1880s through the 1930s."

This lecture will focus on the tourist industry which developed on Lake Sunapee after 1850, with particular emphasis on local personalities who helped to make it happen. The discussion, led by Nancy Dutton, will include the varied activities of these visitors, from spiritualist lectures to dances and regattas. Nancy who has lived in this region for thirty years has developed a deep interest in its history and people. She served as Director of the New Hampshire Division of Historical Resources which led to her current interest and research on the development of Lake Sunapee as a summer destination. Trail-walk Series: GPS for Trail Mapping

Join Applied Meteorologist Dr. Robert Crane for a GPS mapping training session. A classroom overview of GPS technology is followed by a short trail hike to collect GPS data. Participants return to the Fells Education Center classroom for a demonstration of spreadsheet software to create a map of the trail. Bring your GPS unit and wear suitable clothes for a short hike. Trail-walk Series: Introduction to Geocaching

It is estimated that there are nearly half a million geochaches all over the globe. Geocaching is an outdoor hobby using a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver to find a "geocache" or "cache". Caches are typically small, waterproof containers containing "treasure" and a log book. Enthusiasts are called geocachers and they collect coordinates for hidden geocaches and log their finds on online bulletin boards on geocacher websites. They can also create and post new geocaches. This class is designed for experienced GPS users. An introductory talk will be followed by field-based practice. Sturdy shoes recommended. Personal GPS unit required. Meet at The Fells Gatehouse. Exhibit: Summer Rest

Step back in time and enter the Roosevelt Bedroom, authentically decorated and furnished as a Victorian era hotel room and imagine yourself a summer guest at one of the grand hotels, inns, or boarding houses that once ringed Lake Sunapee. An accompanying photo exhibit highlights Lake Sunapee grand hotels of the period. The Fells Main House, open during Main House hours, free with Fells admission.

Spring Wildflower Field Trip

Join Thelma Hewitt, New England Wild Flower Society trustee and Native Plant Garden Designer and Consultant for a walk through a private native woodland garden and learn about spring woodland wildflowers. Observe naturally occurring colonies and cultivated garden paths that are home to typical New Hampshire woodland flora, including about twenty species of natives that are listed as rare or endangered. We've selected a fabulous array of six private homes and gardens--situated on and nearby Lake Sunapee--for this self-guided tour. Enjoy spectacular homes with gorgeous views of lake and mountain and inspirational gardens featuring beautiful perennials, shoreline shrub plantings and woodland drifts of wildflowers. Tour headquarters is The Fells where you pick up your ticket and tour map at the Gatehouse. Return for afternoon refreshments. $20 in advance, $25 day of tour.

Children's Corner--Holiday Crafts from Nature

Wild Harvest Arrangement

Botanical artist Mauli McDonald demonstrates her unique style of botanical design utilizing materials from the natural world ranging from fresh flowers to mosses, feathers, and antlers. Participants create their own wild harvest arrangement using native woodland materials from Mauli's Art Of Nature studio and shop. Meet at The Fells Gatehouse.
